Where are they?

Your kidneys are two bean-shaped organs about the size of a fist and are located in the middle of the abdomen towards the back. Two ureters connect your kidneys to your bladder.

What do they do?

Your kidneys have many very important roles within your body. One of their main functions is to filter and clean your blood.

When your body processes the food you eat there is waste left over and this waste goes into the blood. Blood with waste is then sent to your kidneys where it is filtered by millions of units called nephrons.

Once the blood is filtered by the nephrons, the left-over waste and excess water become urine which is then sent to the bladder through the ureters. The filtered and clean blood is released back into your body.

Other main functions of your kidneys are to regulate blood pressure and produce red blood cells.
